CardWise Compass
A clearer path to free travel.
Hi friend!
Welcome to the second edition of the CardWise Compass!
Last issue, we talked about the power of sign-up-bonuses. I want to build on that, because bonuses can vary in their real value.
A welcome offer can look generous on the surface, but the type of points you earn matters just as much as the size of the bonus.
Here's our framework one more time, and next issue I'll remove the explanation:
Signal: A high-value recent deal or offer
Strategy: A principle to maximize the travel value of your points
Scenario: A helpful example of the suggested strategy
Step: A call to action based on everything shared above
Today's Issue at a Glance:
Signal: $80 back, just for signing up for a shopping portal!
Strategy: Transferable points give you flexibility, and flexibility creates value
Scenario: The same number of points can unlock dramatically different outcomes
Step: Prioritize cards that offer transferable currencies before airline or hotel-specific cards
Let's get into it.
Signal
There's a sweet offer from Capital One Shopping currently where you can earn $80 just for signing up with their link for their shopping portal, downloading their browser extension, and then shopping as you normally would.
Using a shopping portal like Capital One Shopping or Rakuten is a great way to earn rewards on everyday purchases. When you are shopping online, the Capital One Shopping extension will automatically apply coupons and earn rewards for you.
The $80 you will earn here can be used for many different gift cards at a company called Tango.
These portals are pretty straightforward, but if it would be helpful to see a "how-to" portal guide, let me know!
Strategy
Mistake #2 is chasing a bonus without considering the flexibility of the points you're earning.
Airline miles and hotel points are tied to one ecosystem. They can be fantastic, if you know you'll use them.
But if award space is limited, prices spike, or your plans change, you don't have many options.
Transferable points are different, as they can be moved to multiple airline and hotel partners.
That means you can:
Avoid being stuck in one program
Take advantage of transfer bonuses
Choose the airline with the best availability
Protect your points from devaluation
Now compare that to earning 75,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the powerful Chase Sapphire Preferred card.… or bonuses that lock you into one path?
If you don't already have one (or a few) cards that earn transferable points, I'd prioritize these very strongly.
You can always add airline or hotel-specific cards later once you know they fit your travel patterns.
If you're unsure what card to get, book your free "Let Points Cover Your Next Trip" strategy call and we'll map it out together.
If this has been helpful, would you please forward this newsletter to a friend who enjoys travel? You can also share my link so they can get their own version of the points guide and subscribe. Thank you so much!
Next issue, we'll talk about another costly mistake: redeeming points for less value than they're worth.
Blessings and I hope to hear from you soon!
